A catastrophic fuel tanker truck blast in Niger State, Nigeria, has claimed at least 70 lives and injured 56 others, according to the National Emergency Management Authority (NEMA). The explosion occurred after a petrol tanker overturned, spilling fuel that ignited into a massive blaze.
The incident devastated the area, destroying over 15 shops and leaving survivors in urgent need of medical attention. “The injured have been transported to hospitals for treatment, while recovery efforts for the deceased are ongoing,” NEMA said in a statement.
What Caused the Explosion?
The tragedy unfolded as local residents, many of whom live in poverty, rushed to collect the spilled fuel despite warnings. Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) sector commander Kumar Tsukwam stated that attempts were made to prevent the crowd from gathering, but the explosion occurred before they could disperse.
“Most of the victims were impoverished locals who had gathered to scoop up the petrol,” Tsukwam said. Firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze, but the damage was already extensive.

Fuel-related accidents are not uncommon in Nigeria, Africa’s largest oil producer. The country has been grappling with a severe cost of living crisis following the removal of a decades-old petrol subsidy by President Bola Tinubu in May 2023. The price of fuel has soared by over 400%, making incidents like this increasingly deadly as desperate residents risk their lives to collect spilled fuel.
Immediate Aftermath and Ongoing Efforts
In line with Islamic burial rites, graves were being prepared for the victims on Saturday night. Niger State, a predominantly Muslim region, has seen local officials and residents working tirelessly to recover bodies and care for the injured.
Governor Bologi Ibrahim’s spokesperson urged citizens to prioritize safety in such situations, especially when fuel tanker trucks are involved.

This incident comes just months after a similar blast in Jigawa State, which claimed 153 lives, one of the deadliest fuel-related accidents in Nigerian history. Such disasters highlight the urgent need for safety measures and awareness campaigns to prevent future occurrences.
