Adam Coy, a former Ohio police officer, was convicted of murder on Monday for the December 2020 shooting of Andre Hill, a 47-year-old Black man. Coy, who is white, shot Hill four times outside a Columbus home, mistaking a mobile phone for a weapon. Facing life imprisonment, Coy admitted in court that he only realized his fatal error upon approaching Hill’s body.
The incident began when Coy responded to a complaint about a vehicle left running. Spotting Hill inside a garage, Coy ordered him to step out. Bodycam footage revealed Hill complied, holding his phone and keys, yet Coy opened fire. Prosecutors argued Hill followed orders and posed no threat, a stance that resonated with jurors.
The case prompted Columbus to adopt “Andre’s Law,” mandating immediate medical care for injured suspects, and led to a $10 million settlement with Hill’s family—the largest in city history.
